Constructing and Developing my Double Page Spread

<<Initial Design

 This was the initial design and layout that I first created on Microsoft Publisher for my double page spread before writing my actual article. I showed this version of my double page spread and they told me that the pages lacked color and vibrancy like the other pages had and that if my artist's name sounded like the word 'Wild' why not make the font and theme of the page really wild and messy.




Constructing my Double Page Spread on Photoshop:

1. I reconstructed my magazine on Photoshop, wrote the
article and changed the image. I also changed the text of the
headline to make it look more wild an out of control as well
 as addingthe phrase 'Dubstep's new wild child' underneath
the headline.

2. I then realized that the headline, pull quote and sub heading
did not stand out as much as they should so I decided to add a
paint splash behind them to keep in with the theme of
wildness that my target audience wanted to see and
to also make them very visible and eye catching. I added
color to the key words in the subheadings in order to
make them more visible and eye catching once more.

3. After that I then saw that the page lacked some color
so I decided to add some more paint splatters to keep
within the theme of messiness but I made them three
different shades of blue in order to give the page some
vibrancy and color.

Developing my Double Page Spread:

2nd Draft: In response to my target audience I gave my
double page spread a theme of wildness.messiness to
correspond with the artist's name and character. In order
to do this I added paint splashes behind text and on the page
to add color and vibrancy and 'wildness' to the page since
this would be the most appealing to my target audience.
After showing this to my target audience, they approved
the theme and new look of the double page spread but
then they told me that there was a lot of useless space
in the part of the photo above the artist and that I
should fill that space up with something interesting.

Final Draft: In response to the feedback I received from my target
audience I added the DUBHEAD logo behind Wil-D and increased the
size of the photo in order for it to fill up most of the empty space
in the background.

Developing my Contents Page

<<Initial Design
This is the initial design of my contents page which I first produced on Photoshop. I followed the layout which I have pictured to the right. After creating this version I then showed it to my target audience and straight away they told me that alot was missing from  contents and that although the page did look good aesthetically it lacked alot of the conventions that a professional magazine contents page would have and there where alot of spelling mistakes.



Developing my Contents Page:

1st Draft: At first I thought that all I needed to do was to make
 my titles more visible by placing them in banners and also fixing
my spelling mistakes, but after showing this draft to my target
 audience they told methat the image related to the 9th page
was too dark and looked very unprofessional,the image
 relating to the 15th page waz to similar to the front cover
 page and that the image relating to the 26th page was
over exposed. As well as that they told me that I was
 missing a vital point in any magazine contents page, a 
subscribe section.

2nd Draft: In response to the feedback I received
from my target audience I decided to change
the image relating to the 9th and 15th page as
well as decreasing the exposure on the image
relating to the 26th page. I also moved the
'Plus' section over to the left hand side of the
page because I realized that it is still very
important on the page so I should put it on
the left hand side (since we read from left to right)
so it will be one of the first things you see and also
it would allow me to use bigger images that would
catch the eye of my target audience. Also in response
to feedback I added a subscribe box telling readers
to subscribe via text or online and also a competition
to entice readers to read into the magazine. I then
showed this version to my target audience and they
told me that they would rather receive some sort of
technology or device in the competition than
tickets.

3rd Draft: In response to the feedback I received
from my target audience for my 2nd draft I decided
to change the competition prize from tickets to
an iPhone4S since that would be more favorable.
I then showed this version of my contents page to
my target audience and they told me that the
ways in which they could be in touch
with the magazine was limited, what about
social networks like Facebook or twitter? and that
 the subscribe box was too large.

Final Draft: In this draft I acted on the feedback
I received for my 3rd draft. I made my subscribe box
smaller and also I added the DUBHEAD twitter and
Facebook page into the subscribe box so that readers
would be able to access us on these social networks
as well as our website.

Constructing and Developing My Front Cover

<<Initial Design
The image pictured to the left is very first draft of my magazine that I created using Microsoft Publisher. I decided that I would follow this main layout (pictured to the right) for my front cover. What I liked most about this front cover was the headline and the puffs and the image I used but after showing it to my target audience they told me that the front cover was to plain and dull even though I had used the color blue to try and add a little vibrancy to the page they said that the image was too plain and didn't jump out at them and that some of the text was hard to read.



Constructing the magazine on Photoshop

1. First things first, I created my front
cover again on Photoshop but I made
 changes to the language and wording that I
 used on the front cover.

2. Then I added a purple gradient
overlay to the masthead to make
it more vibrant and eye-catching.

3. Then I added some copy on top
of  the masthead because the gradient
in a way now counted as a banner. This
then made my magazine look more
interesting and energetic

4. I then made the image lie on
top of the image because
this was one of the codes
and conventions of maga-
zine front covers and this would
make my magazine look more
professional

5. After that I then gave all the copy on
the front cover a drop shadow effect
in order to make the copy much more
visible and easy to read.

6. Then I added adjustment layers to the image.
These layered altered the brightness/contrast, levels
 and curves of the image which made the image
look much more vibrant and energetic.

<<First Draft
After getting feedback from my target audience I decided to remake my magazine on Photoshop because it has a lot more design and editing features than Publisher does. I then decided to get more feedback from my target audience and they told me that the front cover did indeed gain much more vibrancy and the text was much easier to read but they did tell me that the cover lines at the upper left hand side of the image needed to be aligned to the left in the same way I aligned the puffs at the bottom right and that "Dubsteps'" would need to be spelled as "Dubstep's"







<<Second Draft
In response to the feedback I received from my target audience I changed the alignment of the cover lines and the punctuation in Dubstep's. But then after showing my front cover to my target audience again they told me that there was a large gap between the puffs and the serial bar, they suggested that I could fill up with the space with another puff.












<<Final Draft
I added one more puff to my magazine in response to the feedback I received from my target audience. After showing it to my target audience once again they didn't have any more suggestions or improvements that I would need to add so I could tell that this version of my front cover was the most appealing to my target audience.

Ideal Reader Profile

This is the ideal reader profile for my magazine. This is to show what the ideal person that would read my magazine would be like; what food they might eat, whether they are employed or not, whether they are students, social class, age range, clothes they might wear and even what possesions they may possess.

Since I already know what type of person the ideal reader for my magazine would be because of the results of my survey but this wasn't made so I could use it as a reference, but instead it was made so that if any brand or company that may benefit from advertising their product in my magazine they can look at what type of people read my magazine and decide whether or not they are they type of people who are part of their target audience. If the readers of my magazine are part of the target audience of product made by a company or brand, then they wil wish to advertise their product in my magazine, this is one of the main purposes of an ideal reader profile.

To make it clear what type of person reads my magazine I have explained what possesions they may have,  what they like to do when they go out and also what way of life they follow. Aswell as with text I have used images to actually show the type of drinks, cosmetic products, clothing brands, snacks and technology that the reader consumes.

This is my contact sheet which contains all the images that I have taken  myself in order for me to use in my magazine. You may think that the image of the stars is not mine but I did actually take that on a conveniently scheduled holiday to Kenya. Out there, there isn't any light pollution so you can clearly see the night sky so I quickly snapped a picture because I thought a photo would be useful for my magazine.

I decided to use a male character for the main images in my magazine. After looking at other magazines like NME and Vibe (since there aren't any established dubstep magazines) I quickly gathered that I would need to have a variety of shots for my images like close ups, mid shots fully body shots etc. As well as the shots I had to think about the location, lighting and what was happening in the image in relation to the main article which was the main artist taking us back to his hometown where he grew up. Since the main article was about the main artist returning home I decided to base the article in the artists neighborhood and home this way it would put the readers right into the shoes of the main artists featured on my magazine.

After taking my photographs I played with the exposure, size, color and background of the images I would use on Photoshop and then placed them into the layout of each page of my magazine. There were some images which I did not take properly or they cut of the person's head so I was forced to retake them

I have analysed 3 Industry Magazine Front Covers in order to show my understanding of the codes and conventions of a proper magazine front cover. Since there aren't many actual Dubstep magazine's out there I analysed the Front Covers of magazine's with similar genre's like DJ, VIBE and Mixmag.

Here is my own version of a front page of the Sun newspaper. The main article talks about the 'youths' at the London Riots. I made sure to follow the regular codes and conventions of a newspaper front cover for the Sun which would include a large image, bright colors, masthead, headline, sub-heading, columns, strap-line and informal language in order for my front page to look more like an actual front page.

Preliminary Task: School Magazine

Preliminary Task Analysis

Masthead: My school magazine is called 'Reach' and I used the colour red for the font in order for it to contradict with the green colour of the back ground and for that to act as a banner, this way the text is much easier to see because red and green are contrasting colours. I called my magazine 'Reach' because it is a school magazine and I wanted my magazine name to represent reaching for your dreams which will appeal to the teachers and students who read the magazine. 

Logo: Since we read form left to right I decided to place my logo right after my masthead so that it would be the next thing seen after the masthead. My logo is a picture of 5 people putting their fingers together to make a star, the image is taken from below so we have a clear view of the sky, this signifies a star in the sky. Since the name of my magazine is 'Reach' coming from the phrase 'Reach for the stars' which is related to reaching for your dreams and aspiring to be successful which are the reasons why we get an education in the first place, I purposely used that image so that it would symbolize aspiration which is appealing to the young people in the school who are aiming to be successful in life.

Headline: I made the headline the next largest font on the page and placed it on the upper side of the page, this way a reader would be able to clearly tell that this is the headline and is the most important article on the page. Also I used the popular phrase 'It's all in the wrist' to make the magazine seem comedic and light hearted since the phrase uses informal language so that the readers can feel as if they are having a casual conversation with a friend which is appealing to younger audiences like the students of the school.

Straplines: I added strap lines to the magazine in order to show who wrote the article and because it is one of the codes and conventions of a magazine, this way my magazine would look more like a magazine.

Layout: In order for people to distinguish this as a magazine I made sure lay the articles out in coloumns. This way I am not using walls of text which may look un-interesting and un-appealing to younger audiences and also I am following the codes and conventions of magazines.

Image: I used a mid-shot image of the captain of the basketball team prepping himself to take a free-throw. Since the headline is 'It's all in the wrist' I wanted to use an active image of someone actually doing something with a basketball in order for a reader to clearly distinguish without even having read the article that the article is about basketball. I told the the captain of the football team to have a quite serious expression on his face in order to try and create a tense atmosphere in the image since he is not smiling but is instead serious about taking the shot and leading his team to victory.

Text Boxes: To divide the page properly I used text boxes, this way a reader won't get the stories on the page mixed up and will associate the right headlines with the right articles.

Colour Scheme: I have used the colours red, green, white and black for my magazine. Red and green are very bright and appealing colours so they can immediately catch a readers eye and also the colours red and green stand out from one another so then can be easily seen. I made the colour for the font on the articles black instead of a bright colour to make sure that it would be as easy as possible to read and used a white background for the text so you can clearly see the text.

Drop Letters & Pull Quotes: I used drop letters once again because it is one of the codes and conventions of a magazine, same with the pull quote, so this way my magazine looks more like a real magazine. I placed the pull quote at the top of the 2nd column of the 2nd article in order for it to be clearly seen. I wrote 'There must be something in the food' the quote is interesting and makes a reader question what exactly is in the food which will make them want to read on more into the article. Also rather than using colour for the pull quote I decided to outline the top and bottom of the quote with thick red lines, I also made the font larger for the quote in order for someone to be able to clearly distinguish the text as a quote.
